ABOUT THE ROLE

We are looking for a full-time Senior Environmental Health Technical Officer to join our dedicated team of officers within the Council’s Environmental Health and Licensing service.

The post is fixed term, initially for 12 months with the possibility that this period may be extended or that the post may be made permanent.

You will play a key role within the Council’s Environmental Health Residential team, supporting the team in preparing for and implementing the provisions of the Renters’ Rights Act 2025 which are coming into effect over the next year.

The service delivers the full range of environmental health and licensing functions across the Borough. The work of this post will therefore be varied and may include the enforcement of private sector housing standards including the inspection of HMOs, taking action to bring empty homes back into use, investigating complaints of noise and other statutory nuisances and the use of statutory powers relating to public health protection and pest control.

The role will involve hybrid working, with part of your time being office-based in addition to working from home.

ABOUT YOU

You will have a degree or equivalent qualification in a subject related to the field of environmental health; this may include a degree in law or a relevant science subject. In addition, you will have experience of undertaking inspections, preparing statutory notices and enforcing relevant legislation in the field of environmental health.

Experience within a local authority in the area of private sector housing enforcement, including competence and training in the application of the Housing Health and Safety Rating System are desirable for this role. Alternatively, applicants with experience in the investigation of statutory noise nuisance and who have completed the Institute of Acoustics Certificate of Competence in Environmental Noise Measurement, or have undergone equivalent training, may be considered for the role.

You will be able to effectively apply your knowledge and draw on your experience to support the work of the Environmental Health Officers on the team. You will also be able to work on your own initiative to manage a caseload of complaint investigations.
